Bluffing in FPS, cheat your opponent to submission

The bluff. One of the most underutilized strategies in FPS games is bluffing. Misleading your opponent is often the best way to gain the advantage over him and I encourage players to do it as much as possible. In advanced matches such as Counter-Strike or COD, it can be as subtle as making a footstep so the other team hears you coming in one direction. More commonly, it will consist of you ‘accidentally’ showing yourself so the opposing team thinks you’re going in a certain direction.

For example in de_dust2, a very popular Counter-Strike map, bluffing B would mean having a teammate make noise / shoot in the dark tunnel at B while the rest of the team waits hidden near their spawn at long A.

The objective you are trying to achieve when bluffing is to make the other team react to your strategy. Sometimes this can be as little as having them look in a different direction, other times you’ll want them to change locations entirely.
Successful bluffs will allow you to take your opponent by surprise, giving you the tactical advantage. The general rule is that the better the other team is, the more subtle your bluff must be. If you go in shooting in circles, they’ll know it’s just a bluff. If you accidentally make footstep sound… they’ll think it’s authentic.

Overall, the hardest things in team bluff is making sure the other part of the team isn’t seen. Too often, the rest of the team is spotted and the the bluff is useless, at which point you’d be better not bluffing at all since it puts you at a disadvantage because you don’t have your entire team with you.

Recap:
- Use bluffs as much as possible, never let your opponent know what you’re going to do.
- Always do the opposite of what your opponent expects
- The most frequent mistake when bluffing is letting your opponent spot your bluff!
- The better the team you are playing, the more subtle the bluff should be.
- Bluffs allow you to gain a tactical advantage by having your opponent modify his strategy, if he isn’t reacting, then the bluff isn’t helping. Usually, if he doesn’t react well to bluffs, a full team rush is often the best tactic to use.

Getting headshots in all FPS games

Getting headshots in Counter-Strike, DOD, COD4 or even TF2 doesn’t come easy. It takes years of practice, a fast machine capable of providing smooth game play and finally… skill. Yet, even then, there are guys who seem to have all of the above and still can’t get consistent headshots. Here’s why:
The golden concept: What you practice, you get good at. Remember that.

If your idea of practice is to jump on a public server and get as many kills as fast as possible, then you’re only harming yourself in the long run. Pubbing does not build skill.

Why?
Because on public servers, you’re matched up against mediocre players. So even if you miss a lot of your shots, as long as you shoot first, you’ll usually end up winning the battle.
Unconsciously, you train yourself to shoot first without aiming. That becomes part of you… even if you don’t want to. If you’re used to playing with the “shoot first, aim second” because you play on pubs a lot, then that’s what you’ll AUTOMATICALLY do even in match situations.

As I previously mentioned, what you practice, you get good at… even if it’s something that doesn’t help you.
The solution: Instead of going for as many kills as possible, go for the highest level of accuracy that you can possibly achieve. Make every single shot count, and always aim for the head. If you’re playing Counter-Strike, make sure that every single kill you get is a headshot, and that you don’t waste a single bullet. When aiming, take as MUCH time as you need to hit the head, even if it means dying in the process. Concentrate on that, and you’ll be practicing perfection.

After a while, you’ll re-train yourself to automatically aim for the head before shooting. You’ll become a human aimbot. A fair bit of warning, the first time you try this, expect to die. You’ll be taking a lot more time to aim than usual, so it will throw your rhythm off and consequently, you won’t get kills that you would of normally gotten by spraying. However, with practice, the time it takes to aim will decrease and your headshot percentage will go up.

Eventually, you won’t even have to think of it and you’ll naturally spend the required time to aim for the head. If you ever find yourself slipping and start shooting too quickly, make sure you do this exercise again!

So remember, if you practice shooting quickly, that’s what you’ll do in the match.
If you practice perfection, you’ll be accused of cheating because you got too many headshots! Life’s tough.

Counter Strike Training Method

In Counter Strike you can’t choose weapons from the start of the round. You start with the standard pistol and then you earn money during the round to buy equipment and weapons for the next round. So the first round is very particular since is basically pistol only. Also when you do certain actions like TeamKilling you loose money and it happens that you can’t afford any weapon and stick with the standard pistol.

How does it work?

It’s simple. Start with any primary weapon, no secondary weapon, no grenades and no equipment. Choose very carefully your pistol based on your taste.
At the beginning of the round drop your primary weapon, so you will be playing with just your sidearm and knife. The challenge is to begin the round with just your pistol and pick up weapons as you play during the round. That way you will be using a lot of weapons from your dead teammates and dead opponents.
Also managing to kill somebody with your pistol, stealing his weapons and win the round is something quite exciting.
You will find yourself playing with a lot of weapons that maybe you wouldn’t choose normally (like if there’s a Negev freak in the server).
You can tweak the difficulty of this by simply starting with Pistol, Knife and some equipment like Kevlar, Helmet, Silencer or Laser.

Why that should help me?

Besides being funny it will also help you to get familiar with pistols (which 90% of the time you will pull out just for finish an opponent when you run out of ammo). Also it will improve your general skill with all the weapons you will find, mostly Sr-8, M4, Lr-300 but also AK147 and G36 which are the most common weapons to find. Also putting yourself in a bad situation and try to get out of there will improve your playing skills and also your creativity.
Creativity is also a huge factor in sticky situations. It will help you being more unpredictable and effective. Also you will be playing more carefully, trying to sneak up on opponents instead of rushing on them.

10 accuracy tips and training.

Improve your shooting accuracy in 10 ways.

Accuracy is crucial in FPS, especially with such a fast gameplay. You will increase your accuracy as long as you play but here are some tips wich might be very helpful if you are a beginner but also you can find some intresting tips also if you are a more experienced player.
Let’s get some more headshots!

1. Change your crosshair settings

Your crosshair is very important. Many players will tell you to choose the dot and to choose it as small as possible. Unfortunatly the dot can’t give you feedback about the accuracy of the weapon you are carrying, especially when you are shooting. Choose instead a crosshair that resizes its arms depending on the current accuracy.

2. Shoot in small bursts

If you use a crosshair that gives you feedback about the current accuracy you will notice that almost every weapon looses accuracy even with a very small burst. The longer the burst the less accurate it will be. Also you have to wait a bit after shooting to let your aim recover as you will notice by your crosshair.

3. Try Semi-Automatic once in a while

Another training method is to play once in a while with semi-automatic. This means you will shoot just one bullet every time you click the fire button. This will make your shoots more accurate but also will force you to adjust the aim more often, just like when you shoot with the DE or the Beretta. When you will get back to full Automatic you will naturally make shorter bursts and you will adjust aim more often and fundamentally hit more bad guys.

4. Adjust your aim settings

We didn’t covered them up yet but there are a lot of aim settings that you can set via console and configurations files. If you aren’t familiar with them just consider sensitivity for now. Try lower the sensitivity as far as you can.
To see how high is your current sensitivity just type \sensitivity in the console. It will give you back the current value. I used to play with a drammatically high value and i lowered it a lot. I lowered it about 7 or 8 points less than what I had previously and helped me a lot.
By doing that you will make more wide movements with your mouse to let’s say turn corners and walljumping but you will have more control on both moving and still targets. However a post about aim settings is coming, so don’t worry.

5. Use the almighty Shotgun scatter shot

I can’t tell you how much shotgun helped me to increase my accuracy. Not with the scattershot itself but with all the other weapons. Why?
Well if you are a beginner with shotgun you will find yourself hitting rarely and being killed a lot. Fail will help you. One of the fastest way to take down a sniper is to rush on him as Tarquin pointed out in his post. If you see somebody rushing on you you will likely pull out your secondary weapon or your sidearm. As we pointed out secondaries are not that accurate and sidearms are quite hard to use. Using the shotgun will force you to use both secondaries and sidearms a lot and since they are not so accurate you will adjust your aim more often to take down some bad guys. Probably this will get you a bad score but don’t worry. When you will get back to autos you will naturally have a better aim and also you will learn to use perhaps one of the most powerful weapons in Urban Terror wich is the Sr-8.

6. Aim at corners and hiding spots

When you walk don’t point your weapon at the floor. Not even right in front of you. You should always point your gun at where you think that enemies will come out: corners, hiding spots and so on. This is very important since you will spend less time adjusting your aim to shoot at enemies. This ability will come along as you get familiar with the maps and as you play.

7. Think about what you are doing

Be councious of what you are doing. When you face an enemy not just shoot but mentally stop for a second and think.
Counciously think: «Ok I’m facing an enemy, I must look for an headshot/I must shoot at his torso». Aim for the torso or head (better). Also consider your opponent’s equipment. If you see that he has helmet and no kevlar just aim for the torso instead of trying the headshot. If you are getting too much legs shots that means that you are aiming too low. Being aware of what you are doing will make you focused. And with better focus comes better aim.

8. Try the Counter-Strike Method

As explained in this post, the Counter-Strike method will help increase your accuracy and creativity.

9. Watch your movements

To avoid bullets often players tend to jump sideways. This might be helpful but especially when you are out of stamina or you have your legs bleeding this might be very hard. Try instead to move sideways randomly. Also depending on your weapon consider moving towards your opponent to have better shots (for example you have to be at point-blank distance to deal high damage with the SPAS).

10. Training

Aim is one of those things that will come along with time. If you are very talented (or you have a lot of time to waste play) you might get this skill very quickly. In other cases it might take time, but the more you play the more you will increase your accuracy and skills.

Master Your FPS skills in 10 steps

Master Your FPS skills in 10 steps
Improve your first person shooting skills in ten easy steps which can be done in any possible way or time proffered by the person. Each step would give a substantial booth towards the person's aiming and accuracy.

1. Private matches are better than public play. You’ll generally play alongside (and against) players of a more equal skill level, and with the same group of players. A more consistent environment produces better results.

2. Losing is better than winning. Do not indulge yourself in owning noobs, that’s time wasted learning nothing. Go up in some higher skill server and take on players better than you. There’s a lot to learn just from watching them take you down.

3. Stick to the settings you feel most comfortable with. Other players will try to convince you to change mouse sensitivity or field of view, but these things are not essential for you to become pro. Comfortable gameplay settings are.

4. Keep (or become) physically fit. It is no coincidence that most pro players are in very good shape.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. A lot of skilled players will be more than happy to help with any questions you may have, or provide a few tips to improve your play.

6. Watch demos or live clan matches. It may not be of quite as much use as watching replays in strategy games, but you can still learn a lot from watching pro players at work.

7. Don’t be hasty. You will not become a gaming God overnight. You may notice some early improvements, but it can take quite a few months before you’re at a level worth talking about.

8. Joining a clan is key. It may be a hassle, and yield unwanted obligations, but it does provide incentive to play and become better. Plus you get to chat with fellow (hopefully similarly skilled) players.

9. Participate in competitions, even if you know that you’ll lose. The experience of match pressure with a meaningful victory at stake is something you’ll need if you’re going to go all the way. You may lose scores of competitions, but you’ll become an expert at tuning out the pressure to win… which will yield you a serious advantage if you ever do become that pro gamer.

10. Don’t become an ass. You know the guys who shared tips with you were more helpful than those who called you a stupid noob when you were starting out, so don’t be the hater. There are enough of those as it is.
